Carla Bley who lived from1936 to 2023, was an American Jazz composer, pianist, organist and bandleader. She was an important figure in the free jazz movement of the 1960s, and a pioneer in the development of independent artist-owned record labels. Her haunting composition Jésus Maria was inspired by the story of a little boy whose name was Jésus Maria. Kids at school had made fun of his name and he came home crying. His mother told him that he was named after both Jesus and Mary, the second part of his first name being Maria. Featuring the clarinet, Catherine, George and Virginia perform their own version of this beautiful piece.
